Things were slow. Jobs were not coming in as fast as they used to. This economy was not as vibrant as it was before. Men and women were really concerned about how they were going to provide for their families. Rent, mortgage, car payments, maxi fare, food and gas bills… The list was endless.
Mike was troubled. He was not sure how long he could hold on. Everything seemed so expensive. The children were getting older, they needed more things and more things meant more money. He was not even sure this Bible thing was relevant. “This is for people who business fixed,” he was thinking. His eye scanned a page in the book of Matthew.
“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?” (Matthew chapter 6 verse 26.)
Mike’s thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the loud chirping of a bird on a branch of the mango tree next door. The mangoes were just starting to ripen. Mike was always amazed that the birds seemed to know when the fruits were ready.
They always showed up, easily got the mangoes on even the highest branches and never went hungry. That bird was enjoying breakfast. Mike thought over his position. It started to become clear that God provided for birds.
God cared for birds and provided for them? He and his family would be provided for as well. Of course, he would continue to work hard and try his best, but never again would be bring himself to that extreme worrying point. The bird flew off and was replaced by another. Oh yes, the confidence in his mind grew. He was glad that someone bigger and more knowledgeable was in charge.
Reflection:
You too can have confidence in God and believe that He can and will provide for all your needs. The first step is to accept Him as Lord and Saviour. It is not that He is a quick fix or a magician on-call, but He will build your faith, even when you are at your lowest point.
Say this prayer and make Him the Lord of your life:
Lord Jesus, I thank you for loving me, even when I did not love You. I thank you for sending your Son to die for my sins. Forgive me now and I want to live the rest of my life in a way that pleases You. Amen.
