Shinelle worked quickly with accuracy and precision. She was on the gold shimmering eyeshadow now; this customer wanted all the glitz and glamour.
‘Buzz’ the doorbell rang and in came her 3 o’clock appointment, Ms. Theresa.
“Hey Ms. T! How are you?”
“Great!”
“Face cleansed, moisturised and prepped? I’ll be with you shortly.”
As Shinelle wrapped up the other client, Ms. T settled into the comfy leather chair. Her eyes spanned the salon, between the light green curtains, was a sign marked, “He is my rock and foundation, I will not be moved.” It was adorned with makeup brushes and a glowing face peaked out from it.
Ms. T smiled as she pondered the picture.
“Interesting pic,” she said.
“Thanks, a client gave me recently. But you know it’s true. Without a good foundation, things are hard to stay in place. Most people like the finishing touches on the face, but without a good foundation it doesn’t hold for long. It’s true for makeup, houses and life…”
As Ms. T settled into the salon chair, those words resonated in her heart. She was all dressed up to attend her gala charity affair, but what was the driving force behind all this? She felt really good about the work she was doing, helping homeless children receive a good education and a mentor, but she didn’t want the effect to be short-lasting.
“I think I need somebody like you Shinelle, to speak at my next charity event. You can give those children what they need – a hope.”
Shinelle smiled.
“Truth is Ms. T, I can only give them what I have. And the reason I am what I am and make it through each day is because of Jesus Christ; He’s my foundation. All the other trimmings are secondary. But especially after that rough break-up and when York, my youngest child, got sick with leukemia, it’s Him I held onto. And I’m still holding on now.”
“Shinelle, I admire your faith,” remarked Ms. T.
“Enough to want it? None of us are good enough by ourselves Ms. T… not me, you or anyone.”
Ms. T thought for a while. She always thought that running charity events and reaching out to people in need, made her good enough. After all, she pumped her personal funds into these projects. Now Shinelle was telling her about this hope, faith and trust that seemed to be a ‘in with all your might‘ kind of thing.
Before her appointment was over, Ms. T said, “Shinelle, tell your Jesus I want to know Him.”
“Let’s tell Him now.”
In the quietness of the salon, Ms. T opened up her heart to Jesus. She wanted Him to be the foundation of her life. She liked the nice things she did, but realised they weren’t enough. She would build her life on God from now, and the difference would shine through her life as she did her good works with a different purpose- to glorify God.
Reflection:
You too can build your life on God’s Word. The Bible says that we have all sinned and none of us are good enough for Heaven on our own (Romans 3:23).
Say this prayer to ask Him to become your Lord and Saviour:
Lord Jesus, I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead. Forgive me for all sins. I want to build my life upon Your Word. Help me live for you and guide me in all I do. In Jesus’ Name. Amen
